Hi Jill, is there a photo of the entire tree? A lot of times maples can get cracks on their trunks due to extreme temperature changes (generally referred to as frost cracks). They usually occur on the southwest side of the trunk. In the spring these cracks can become vulnerable to fungus and bacteria.
When did you notice the damage to the bark?
The bumps on the leaves are very common on maples. They are called falls and will likely not effect the tree’s overall health.
The good news is the branches do not seem to be showing stress.
If there appears to be fungus in the open wound, you can clean it to prevent further spreading. To clean the open wound, use a diluted bleach/water solution (1 part bleach to 4 water). The tree should do the rest and close up the open wound.
It is hard to tell from the picture, is there any chance it was struck by lightning?
The areas highlighted in red are the new tissue that is growing to eventually cover the open wound.
Please be sure to reach out to us if you see any stress on the top of the tree or if the crack begins to grow larger.
50 years ago today....At 4:17 p.m. EDT on July 20, 1969, Walter Cronkite exclaimed "Man on the moon!". He was describing the moment that NASA's "Eagle" lunar lander touched down on the surface of the moon, before the eyes of 650 million people watching on their tv’s from Earth. It was truly an epic moment in history. Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong also made history when he took that infamous step onto the Moon’s surface, saying, “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." As a child, I was especially curious about what was going on in outer space. It was hard to imagine how on Earth, no pun intended, we could shoot a rocket to the moon and then WALK on it?! This children’s book is a wonderful way to introduce your children to that first step on the moon, in addition to later moon missions. Cool pictures and historical info make this an educational and entertaining keepsake...or maybe even the inspiration for that future little astronaut in your family ☺️🚀#manonthemoon #nasa #theeaglehaslanded #moon #apollo11 #eaglelunarlander #neilarmstrong #onesmallstep #july201969 #childrensbooks ... One of our beautiful customers, @marlysestrait , gifted us some fresh basil today and it got us thinking about all the delicious summer recipes that call for this aromatic herb. It didn’t take long to discover a plethora of summer dishes that call for fresh basil in this gorgeous new cookbook, The Modern Cook’s Year by Anna Jones. The book is divided into six chapters and each section has recipes that feature whatever fruits and veggies are in season. But the book is more than just a selection of recipes. In between each section, one will discover little words of wisdom and lyrical prose. Jones believes that cooking is an elevated art form and she is an artist in the kitchen, a place where she finds solace. “I think that everyday cooking can be as much an act of meditation, escape, and dare I say it, mindfulness.” This book is bursting with easy recipes that celebrate the season and the harvest. We also have the perfect vessel in which to rinse your farmers market finds...this handmade ceramic colander from m. Bueno is lightweight and worthy of countertop display year round. Made in Olympia, Washington, each piece is beautifully simple and affordable to use everyday. Every cook needs to clean up and we love using these organic, hand-loomed Chef’s towels from @bloomandgive. Not only are they durable, easy to clean, and super absorbent...but the company donates 50% of the profits from the sale of each item to girls’ education programs because...”educating girls is the most effective way to fight gender inequality. When a girl goes to school, she increases her earning potential, she has healthier children and she reinvests more in her family.” And you know how much we love companies that give back ❤️❤️. #lifestylestore #begooddogood #cookbook #basil #fresh #pottery #moderncooking #farmersmarket #uptownmarion #summer #bloomandgive #companiesthatgiveback ...
