A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a blanket with extra weight inside it. The weight of the blanket provides proprioceptive input (awareness of one’s body position in space) to the brain. This has a calming and organizing effect on the central nervous system.
Here are just a few disorders weighted blankets can help:
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Asperger syndrome
- Down’s syndrome
- Cerebral palsy
- Fetal alcohol syndrome
- Restless LegSyndrome
The list honestly goes on and on!
Weighted blankets are made out of flannel and filled with Poly Fiber beads. Weight is distributed evenly throughout the blanket using 6×5 squares. Blankets are washable!
The rule of thumb for getting the right weight is 10% of your child’s body weight plus one pound. (If working with a Therapist please ask their recommendation).
